The Old Bakehouse surrounds a peaceful, colourful courtyard garden.
Built by wool merchants in around 1520, it is reputed to be one of Chulmleigh’s most ancient buildings. In later years, the house became Chulmleigh’s bakery; the original Victorian bread-oven doors now decorate our flowered courtyard.
Colin and Holly Burls established The Old Bakehouse B&B in 1993. We have three charming and comfortable ensuite rooms with facilities including television and DVD, hot refreshments, and access to the guest sitting room. Due to the antiquity of our house we regret that we cannot offer wifi.
We are proud to be the only AA-rated B&B in this part of Devon. Last year the AA Inspector reported: “It was a pleasure to return to The Old Bakehouse… and reassuring to see that standards remain undiminished with warm and genuine hospitality being a great strength. In terms of cleanliness the usual diligence is still very much in evidence… Breakfast was very enjoyable with excellent quality produce, flavoursome and a good range provided. Public areas have great charm and character with the provision of the guest lounge being a useful asset. Overall, much to admire here.”
We welcome children over 11 years old. However, we regret we cannot take pets. Our house is smoke free throughout.
We welcome you, our guests, from near and far, into our beautiful house: our aim is to make you feel totally at home, whether you stay for many days or just a short break. We are sure that you will join the ever-increasing number of guests who return to visit us time and again.
